Irish coastline subject of Kilkee art exhibition
Cultúrlann Sweeney Kilkee will host a multimedia visual art exhibition of works showcasing Ireland’s coastline from 12-16 November.
Artists Frances Birmingham and Pat O’ Sullivan will attend the launch of their exhibition, entitled “Imeall”, on Monday, 5 November at 6.30 pm.
Within this richly layered show the artists attempt to explore themes related to the sea and the edge of the landscape through their work.
Frances Birmingham is a gatherer and collector of things, of found objects both natural and manmade, in her work she arranges and rearranges these found objects to form and shape her story of living and surviving within a coastal seascape. She is both a researcher and fieldworker and inherited a strong sense of place from her family. Her early career was in marine and fisheries and she is now involved in whale and dolphin research-education and local community projects.
Pat O Sullivan was born in County Galway and currently lives in Galway city. She studied Fine Art at GMIT (and Crawford College of Art in the early 90s. After many years of doing other work and training, and raising a family, she recently returned to painting. She finds inspiration in the landscape and is especially drawn to the shoreline. She works mainly in acrylics. She tries to apply the paint in a way that conveys the energy of being on the shoreline – sunlight and the wind as it works on rock, sand, water and plants of the shore.
Members of the public are invited to the exhibition launch at Cultúrlann Sweeney on Monday, 5 November at 6.30 pm. Admission is free.
