Purchase a right of burial

The Council maintains the plots in these grounds and sells them as required. When you purchase a plot  there is no transfer of ownership of the actual area of land in question. The purchase simply entitles you to the exclusive right of burial in that plot.

It is not possible to purchase of a right of burial in advance.

The registrar for the burial ground records the details when you pay the appropriate fee. You may not erect memorials, plaques or headstones until the fee has been paid. You must also obtain permission in order to install or erect any memorial structures.

Purchase a right of burial in a lawn cemetery

Currently, Illaunmanagh, Ballycannon, Quin, Scariff (new), Ennistymon (new) and parts of Drumcliff are designated lawn cemeteries. If you purchase a right of burial in one of these burial grounds you may not install a perimeter of any kind including kerbstones/footstones around the burial plot. You are also not allowed to place stones, pebbles or any other materials on the surface of burial plots. This is in accordance with Bye Law 29 of the Burial Ground Bye Laws 2015 – County Clare.
