The Cathaoirleach, Cllr. A. O’Callaghan presided and welcomed the members.
Votes of sympathy
At the outset, Cathaoirleach, Cllr. A. O’Callaghan sought votes of sympathy from the elected members.
Cllr P. Hayes noted that this meeting is a particularly sad occasion and reflected on the life of recently deceased Cllr. P.J. Kelly. Cllr. P. Hayes noted the depth of knowledge Cllr. Kelly had in relation to the Planning Act and remarked on his illustrious career as an elected member spanning 50 years.
Cllr. P. Hayes extended condolences to P.J.’s wife Maura, daughters Aoife and Alma and son Barry John, Cllr. P. Hayes proposed that the meeting be adjourned as a mark of respect.
Cllr. J. Cooney seconded the proposal for a full adjournment and paid respect to the late Cllr. P.J. Kelly.
Tributes were paid to the late Cllr. P.J. Kelly by the elected members who described P.J. as a gentleman, a good friend and a great mentor. The members noted that P.J. had an extensive knowledge of all matters related to planning and was passionate about his village of Lissycasey and rural Ireland in particular. The elected members recalled how P.J. had a wonderful way with words and used humorous phraseology throughout his career. The members noted that P.J. would always share his knowledge with his colleagues and valued their opinion. They stated that it was an honour to have served with him on Clare County Council.
The elected members were unanimous in supporting the full adjournment of the meeting and in extending sympathy to P.J.’s wife Maura, son Barry John, daughters Aoife and Alma, extended family and friends.
P. Dowling, Chief Executive on behalf of the staff and executive of the Council associated with the sentiments expressed and noted what a huge achievement it was for P.J. to be one of the longest serving Councillors in the country. He noted that he showed courtesy and the upmost of respect to the staff in the organisation. Mr. Dowling extended sincere condolences to the Kelly family.
It was noted that the adjourned meeting will take place on Tuesday, 15th October at 3:00 p.m.
