Current update of Killaloe Bypass/Shannon Bridge Crossing/R494 Upgrade

Current Update May 2024

Work is progressing well across the Project now we are in Summer and experiencing drier weather. There is a substantial amount of construction activity currently underway across all areas of the site. A number of critical Project Milestones have been achieved recently. Most notably:- Completion of Structural Steel installation to the Shannon Bridge Crossing, commencement of deck pours to the bridge and re-opening of the R494 to through-traffic (including opening 1.5km of new carriageway from Birdhill).

Bridge Deck

Steel fixing and formwork to deck progressing.

Concrete pours to deck have commenced.

R494

Section 1: Accom. Wks. to properties around Roolagh Junction are progressing. Works to Pump Station are in progress. Road Drainage and Watermain installation programmed to commence after June Bank Holiday Weekend.

Sections 2/3: Northbound lane open to traffic. Southbound lane under construction. Accom. Wks. In progress.

Section 4: Gas main and watermain diversions have commenced.

Section 5: Accom. Wks in progress.

Section 6/7: Both lanes open. Work continues on verge and shared facility etc.

CIE/IE Railway Bridge

Bridge open to traffic. Works continue on verge and shared facility.

Kilmastulla Bridge

Bridge open to traffic. Works continue on verge and shared facility.

Shannonside Business Park

Retaining wall constructed. Works continue on verge and shared facility.

West Embankment to Clarisford: Walls to embankment in progress.

Clarisford to Shantraud: Paving activities in progress. Accom. Wks. In progress.

Shantraud Roundabout to Creeveroe Road: Works to 2-way cycle track, footpath and verges in progress. VRS installation in progress.

Creeveroe Road to Hill Road: Works to 2-way cycle track, footpath and verges in progress.

Hill Road to Kincora Roundabout: Pavement up to binder level laid except for last 200m. Works to 2-way cycle track, footpath and verges in progress.

Kincora: Road tie-ins continue.

Note:

  • The R494 has re-opened for through traffic but Temporary Traffic Management remains in place. The R496 remains a viable alternative route.
  • All vessel operators are requested to pay attention to navigational buoys in the vicinity (upstream & downstream) of the works zone and to give a wide berth to marine plant associated with the works. We further request that all vessels proceed with extreme caution if in the vicinity of the works zone.
