Pedestrianisation of the old Killaloe Ballina Bridge

Clare County Council have announced the decision to pedestrianise the old Killaloe Ballina Bridge following an extensive period of public consultation and a successful trial period that commenced two months after the opening of the new Brian Boru Bridge from 6:00 p.m., October 17,2025 the historic narrow stone arch bridge will close permanently to all vehicle traffic and will serve as a pedestrian and cycle link between the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina.

This decision follows a comprehensive process (Section 38) in which both councils recognised the importance of gathering robust data and undertaking public engagement before deciding to prohibit vehicular traffic on the historic bridge.

Notice of Consideration of a Scheme for the Abatement of Rates in Respect of Vacant Properties

Section 9 of the Local Government Rates and Other Matters Act 2019 makes specific provision that elected members of a local authority may make a scheme providing for the abatement of rates (reduction or partial exemption from commercial rates applied) in respect of vacant properties, and that such a scheme shall be approved at the local authority budget meeting, concerning the local financial year to which the scheme shall apply.
