Heritage Week at Clare libraries
Clare County Library is organising a wide variety of events in libraries around the county for Heritage Week 2018, which runs from 18 to 26 August.
‘Discover the past, Build the future’ is the main theme of Heritage Week with a record 108 events taking place around Clare. The 16th annual celebration of Clare’s built, natural and cultural heritage is being coordinated locally by Clare County Council and The Heritage Council, with support from Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
The ‘Song of Granite’ film will be shown at Scariff Public Library on Tuesday 21 August at 6.30 pm and in Kilrush Public Library on Wednesday 22 August at 6.30 pm. The film revolves around the life of the great traditional Irish singer, Joe Heaney. The stylised black-and-white picture, obscuring the border between documentary and fiction, is a cinematic ballad that invites viewers to join the talented artist on his dramatic life journey. Along the way we get a sense of the difficult yet humble life of the people of Ireland over the course of the last century.
‘Reconnecting with Celtic Trees for Wisdom and Peace’, a discussion with Jackie Queally, takes place at the De Valera Public Library, Harmony Row, Ennis on Tuesday 21 August at 7.00 pm and also at Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon, on Wednesday 22 August at 3.00 pm. The discussion will inform attendees about how trees (based on the lunar year) were teaching aids in the past, and how today there is wisdom to be found in approaching the matter with fresh eyes. Jackie will guide participants through the Celtic Year with anecdotes and illustrations and will present some tree poems as part of a seasonal guided meditation.
‘Making Connections’ - a listening room event showcasing oral histories from Ennis town takes place at the De Valera Public Library, Harmony Row, Ennis on Thursday 23 August at 1.00 pm. A selection of oral history clips from the Cuimhneamh an Chláir archive will be used while Paula Carroll of Clare FMs ‘The West Wind’ will host a participative listening room event host featuring audio clips of Ennis from times gone. The event is supported by the Heritage Council and Clare County Council.
Joseph McCooey, Archaeologist, presents ‘Medieval Heritage of Doolin’ in Ennistymon Public Library on Friday 24th August at 7.00 pm.
