Construction to begin on Clonlara housing scheme

23 October 2018

Work on a new Clare County Council social housing development comprising 9 homes will commence in Clonlara by mid-November.

Funded by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government under the Rebuilding Ireland Programme, the development comprises a mix of 2-bed, 3-bed and 4-bed units in a range of single and two storey houses.

Clare County Council has signed a contract with Pat Keogh Construction Ltd. with the main works commencing in mid-November following lodgment of the commencement notice to Building Control.

Mayor of Clare and Clonlara resident, Councillor Michael Begley, said, “This new housing scheme will complement the existing Clare County Council development of 12 units at Glór na Srutha which was delivered in 2014. The 9 homes will address the housing needs of the village and surrounding area and most importantly, will provide new homes for families and elderly tenants enabling them to live in close proximity to the village and amenities.”

Councillor Gerry Flynn, Chair of the Social Development SPC, commented, “I was SPC Chair when the last housing development opened in Clonlara four years ago and therefore, it is great to see an additional scheme being delivered so soon in the area.  I warmly welcome the continued investment being made by Clare County Council in its housing stock and as has been witnessed with Glór na Srutha, I have no doubt the new tenants will become active members of the local community in Clonlara in the years to come.”

Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council, said the involvement of the local community and Elected Members has been key to the development of the scheme design and layout.  He added, “The Council endeavours to build communities and not just homes and I hope the future residents of this housing scheme will enjoy an exceptional quality of life within the Clonlara community.”

Anne Haugh, Director of Social Development, Clare County Council, commented, “This development is one of 9 capital construction projects for Clare County Council including other sites in Feakle, Shannon, Ennis and Quilty. These projects will result in a minimum of 144 social homes being delivered directly by Clare County Council over the next 2 to 3 years. An additional 84 social homes are being delivered in partnership with Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs).”

The design team for the Clonlara scheme was led by Hassett Leyden & Associates (Architect & Civil Structural Engineers), and also included Matt O’Mahony & Associates Ltd. (M&E Engineers) and Tom McNamara & Ptnrs (Quantity Surveyor).
